Car Seat Safety in Winter

You’ve heard it time and time again, “no coats in the car seat”. So what are you supposed to do when it is cold out? I decided to take a peek at the Buckle Me Baby Coat to see if it was a good option for families to use.

Why I am excited

As a mother and a Child Passenger Safety Technician, car seat safety is something extremely important to me. Winter is a time of little convenience, grumpy kids, and frozen fingers. Getting four kids bundled and loaded into the vehicle at -40 degrees is not high on my want-to-do list. It’s not on there at all, actually.

I have to be methodical. Which coat, which kid, which seat, and in what order. For the younger kids, I usually layer thin, well-fitted clothing while the older kids are too worried about their wardrobe to put on multiple things. They usually opt for a thin sweater then covering up over their seat belt. It can be a PAIN but it is what is safest and I will always take those extra minutes to make sure everyone is traveling as safely as possible.

Even though I have made it over five years doing it this way, I would be lying if I said I wasn’t excited to see clothing made specifically for the car seat. To me, this means car seat safety education, awareness, and resources are on the rise. That’s pretty neat!

The arrival of the Buckle Me Baby Coat

Buckle Me Baby is a small business based out of the USA who has their jackets manufactured locally. Can I just say how much I love that they were able to source that out locally? Props.

Ordering items from the US to Canada can sometimes leave you paying duties or other fees. I was happy when it not only arrived quickly but fee-free! You never really know what you’re going to get when it comes to the postal service. Inside the package was the jacket as well as a visual “how-to” guide.

I wasn’t the only one excited about mail day. She was immediately drawn to the packaging, determined to open it whether it was hers or not. I think she has a major crush on our mail guy…but that’s a story for another day! Let’s just say ever since she got candy from a friend of mine in the mail, she greets him at the door daily.

My daughter just turned four and is around 40″ and 37 pounds. We got the “Power of Pink” Buckle Me Baby Coat in a size 4 which just fits her with room to grow. A size 5 would likely be much too large, the sleeves are on the longer side.

How it works

The Buckle Me Baby Coat is designed to be worn like a regular jacket but with the ability to be fastened overtop of the car seat’s harness rather than underneath. With a large front panel that fastens on the side instead of the in the middle of the child, it is easily pulled to the side to properly buckle the harness. It cuts down on fidgeting with multiple pieces to get the fit just right.

Buckle Me Baby Coat features

Unlike most coats out there, the Buckle Me Baby Coats do not fasten with a zipper. Instead, they conveniently have a strip of velcro reinforced with snaps. The velcro does make me wonder about the longevity of the jacket if you were to pass it down to other siblings – though I suppose velcro itself is replaceable easily enough. The velcro makes it a breeze to open and close for quick trips in and out of the car, you just have to stick it to itself. This comes in handy with unruly children – go ahead, ask me how I know!

Other areas of the jacket that help provide a safe fit in the car seat are the back panel, the shoulder area, and no hood. The back panel is made thinner than the rest of the jacket while still remaining warm. My lovely model here had no complaints about warmth in our frigid weather with just a t-shirt underneath. The snap closures on the shoulders let the harness lay across the majority of the shoulder, reducing the amount of fabric between it and the child even further. It also lets that front panel swing open nice and wide with no bunching.

Little hands can stay nice and warm in the fleece-lined front pouch though mitts are a breeze with the slim cuff design on the sleeves.

What I’m missing

The jacket doesn’t leave me desiring much but I did find one seemingly minor thing that actually stuck out quite a bit for me. No, it is not the lack of hood. I am glad the Buckle Me Baby Coat does not have a hood – they always fall down, my kids don’t like them, and we wear toques and scarves when it is really cold. They usually just annoy everyone in the car seat.

The. Coat. Hook. Loop.

Yes, from everything that I could have had a chance to find and pick apart, the only thing for me is the lack of tiny little coat hook loop. I only noticed because I couldn’t hang it in my daughter’s locker at school – which is fine really. I just place it on the shelf instead and hang it on a hanger at home. Who knew you could miss an inch long piece of fabric?

The jacket seems to be well-made and well thought out. It is designed with children’s safety in mind with the added bonus of convenience, which isn’t always two things that go hand-in-hand.
